Disability Advocacy Service
The Town is supporting a new service for people with a disabilitiy and their families andcarers. The IDAS (Individual Disability Advocacy Service) is free and based at Wembley Community Centre.
Council has committed to support the service with free room hire for three years from 2010 - 2012.
The IDAS program will be delivered by:
A not-for-profit organisation, assisting families and individuals through the provision of community support services including recreation, respite and accommodation for people with a disability; and
Sussex Street Community Law Service
A community not-for-profit legal practice, providing legal and social services to the community including, financial counselling, disability discrimination and disability advocacy.
Professionally trained Individual Advocates employed by UnitingCare West and Sussex Street Community Law Centre will provide confidential appointments to Town residents with a disability and their families/carers. The IDAS program will work with people with a disability on either a short-term or issue-specific basis. Individual Advocates will:
work with people with disability requiring one-to-one advocacy support;
develop a plan of action in partnership with the person with a disability that maps out clearly defined goals;
educates people with a disability about their rights, and; and
work through the plan in partnership with the person with a disability.
The IDAS program uses a broad definition of disability, which includes intellectual, physical, behavioural, psychiatric, emotional, medical, neurological, mental illness and diseases. The program is an independent, free and confidential support service for people with a disability, their family members/carers. There are no age limit for participants. Services include:
information on client's rights, their options and available support services;
referral to an agency or service more appropriate to provide assistance;
one-to-one support work with clients and help for them to deal with problems; and
assistance to deal with issues for clients who can manage on their own.
