Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Household hazardous waste is a group of products used in and around the home that if not used or disposed of properly can cause serious harm to both personal health and the environment.

Due to their dangerous properties these materials are not suitable for disposal in the wheelie bin or verge bulk collections.

Free temporary collection days
The Mindarie Regional Council (of which Town of Cambridge is a member council) is collaborating with the State Government of Western Australia to provide seven collection days for household hazardous waste out of twenty-five collection days to be held throughout the metropolitan area each year.

The first collection day will be conducted at:

The Recycling Centre Balcatta

A permanent household hazardous waste shed is located at the Recycling Centre Balcatta, 238 Balcatta Road, Balcatta, to drop off for free all the categories of hazardous waste listed above, including motor oil, computer equipment, medicines and sharps.  A fee applies to dispose of asbestos cement only (see below).

Please note a maximum of 20 litres or 20kg, or a combination of liquids and solids of up 20kg/litres can be dropped off each day.

The Recycling Centre Balcatta is open Monday to Sunday 7.30am to 4.00pm (except Christmas and New Years Days, and Good Friday).

Asbestos cement material
Asbestos cement material poses a serious danger to personal health and requires particular care when being disposed of.  Please tightly wrap individual sheets of asbestos in durable plastic before taking to the Recycling Centre.

A maximum of three sheets can be dropped off each day, with a charge of $1.00 per sheet for rate payers and $2.00 a sheet for non rate payers.  This charge applies to cover contractor fees for operating this disposal point.

Tamala Park Recycling Centre
Household hazardous waste can also be dropped off at the permanent facility located at Tamala Park Recycling Centre, Marmion Avenue, Tamala Park.  This facility is managed by Mindarie Regional Council.

Mindarie Regional Council represents seven Local Councils in the region:  Cities of Stirling, Perth, Joondalup and Wanneroo; and Towns of Vincent, Victoria Park and Cambridge.

For more information on Tamala Park please visit Mindarie Regional Council's website www.mrc.wa.gov.au.

Transporting household hazardous waste

There are a number of safety precautions you should observe when transporting chemicals to the disposal site:

  • Keep chemicals in their original containers
  • Ensure lids are tightly fitted
  • Place containers of liquids in a tray or plastic bucket so that they do not spill or fall
  • Pack powders and solids securely
  • Keep corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away from poisons
  • Keep oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all other materials
  • Protect taps on drums so that the tap does not break off
  • Travel with your car windows down if carrying flammable or odorous materials
  • Double-wrap old liquid containers in plastic bags to prevent leaking

Mobile phones and accessories
Mobile phone batteries and mobile phones can be disposed of at most mobile phone retailers and the Town’s collection points taking part in the MobileMuster recycling program.

  • Town of Cambridge Administration Building, 1 Bold Park Drive, Floreat
  • Town of Cambridge Library, 99 The Boulevard, Floreat

See www.mobilemuster.com.au for further information and collection points.

Toner and ink cartridges
Printer and ink cartridges can be dropped in 'Cartridges 4 Plant Ark' recycling boxes at participating Australia Post, Harvey Norman, Officeworks, and Dick Smith stores.

Medicines and sharps
Old medicines can be taken at no cost to most pharmacies.  Sharps (needles and syringes) will also be accepted at some pharmacies.

Consider safer alternatives
To make your home a safer environment, consider purchasing less toxic materials.  If low toxic materials are not readily available always just buy enough to do the job in hand - Don't hoard toxic waste!

Poisons Information Centre
In case of poisoning, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
