Project Overview

Last Updated: 21/03/2025

The Town of Cambridge undertakes road rehabilitation projects to ensure the long-term integrity of its road network. Funding for these projects is secured through Federal and State Government allocated under the state funding program.

Road rehabilitation projects are initiated based on a thorough assessment of the pavement condition and traffic loading. This assessment involves a detailed investigation to determine the structural adequacy of the existing pavement.

There are two primary approaches adopted for road rehabilitation:

  1. Resurfacing: When the pavement investigation reveals that the existing structure is sound and can support traffic loading for at least another 20 years, resurfacing treatments are implemented. This involves the removal of the existing asphalt surface layer and its replacement with a new asphalt layer. This approach is akin to replacing the carpet on a structurally sound floor, providing a renewed surface while utilizing the existing foundation.
  2. Pavement Rehabilitation: In cases where the pavement investigation indicates that the existing structure is inadequate to support traffic loading for the desired service life, more extensive rehabilitation is necessary. This is typically due to underlying structural deficiencies that could lead to premature failure of the road surface if only resurfacing is undertaken. In such instances, pavement rehabilitation involves in-situ stabilization techniques to strengthen the existing pavement foundation.

The Road rehabilitation program is shown below, these roads are showing signs of distress, including cracking, heavy patching, depressions, with all being over 20 years since re-surfacing or rehabilitation work.

Rehabilitation Roads Include:

  • Rochdale Road - Wollaston Rd to McClemans Rd: Completed
  • Stephenson Ave - Rochdale Rd to Montgomery Ave: Scheduled 11 to 14 May 2025

Road Closures and Detours

  • Stephenson Avenue: Closed Between Rochdale Road and Montgomery Avenue - 8pm to 5am, 11 to 15 May 2025. Detour via Alfred Road and Brockway Road
  • Railway Parade: Closed between Blencowe Street and Kerr Street - 8pm to 5am, 3 to 6 June 2025 and 11 to 13 June 2025. Detour via St Leonards Avenue, Cambridge Street and Abbotsford Street

What to Expect During Works

Works will involve road closures and detours during construction. Due to the nature of the work, it is expected that sections of the road will be rough but open to traffic periodically, there will increase dust and noise in the immediate work area. It is an unavoidable consequence of the nature of this work. Measures will be in place to minimise the impact.
