Roads

The Town of Cambridge has a total of 190 kilometres of roads and aims to improve your journey through the Town from the coastal suburb of City Beach to Perth’s vibrant CBD.

Road Hierarchy

To promote effective and efficient traffic management, Main Roads Western Australia(MRWA), in consultation with local governments in the early 1990s, developed a Road Hierarchy to designate the role of all roads in Western Australia and to encourage uniform traffic management of roads of the same type.

The Road Hierarchy provides a high level description of the hierarchy performed by roads in the network across WA. Road management is guided by the hierarchy type of each road. More information about road hierarchy can on found here  on MRWA’s website and you can also view the designation of all the roads in the Town via our Interactive Maps.

Transport Network

To ensure the orderly management of traffic flows within the Town of Cambridge the road network is planned and designed in line with best practice by using guidelines and standards from Austroads (the leading body in Australia for road transport), MRWA and Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) and Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA). The aim is to be an effective transport network which will means a more connected, safe and happy community and achieve the following:

  • Full integration and maximum use of public transport options available within the Town. Refer to our Bus Shelter Replacement Program to see location of new bus ore replacement shelters.
  • Optimum mobility for residents and ratepayers (pedestrian and vehicular);
  • Minimal disruption to amenities and lifestyle of ratepayers and residents including exhaust gases caused by traffic;
  • Compliance with State Government gazetted speed limits; and
  • Discouraging all trucks and non-local traffic from using residential streets as inter-district through routes.
  • Active and sustainable travel is encouraged throughout the Town. Visit our Getting Around the Town page to learn more about walking and cycling routes, public transport services, and other active transport options available

In designing and managing traffic flows, the Town will also ensure harmonious relations are maintained with neighbouring councils and is at the forefront of new innovative solutions such as our Safe Active Street project as well as looking to participate in the Safer Local Streets at 40 Km project.
