Cambridge Council has shown its support for the local café and dining scene by abolishing the alfresco permit fee.

The fee was charged to local eateries wishing to set up and operate alfresco areas on the footpath in front of their premises. Charged on a per chair basis, the fee affected some 26 local businesses who paid, on average, $450 a year.

Council agreed the minor loss of revenue was a small price to pay for supporting local businesses, encouraging economic development and providing activated spaces for the community to enjoy.

From 1 July no fees will be charged, however Town approval is still needed before setting up and/or operating an alfresco area.
