The Perry Lakes Water Replenishment Project seeks to permanently re-establish historic water levels in the lakes. This will be done by diverting excess water from the Herdsman Main Drain into Perry Lakes by upgrading and improving existing drainage infrastructure and installation of a pump station next to Newman College. Float controls will monitor both lake and drain levels to ensure that Perry Lakes’ water levels remain as full as possible for the majority of the year.
Revitalising the lakes and establishing permanent water bodies at more historic levels will provide a range of aesthetic, recreation and environmental benefits for the broader community.
The following are the main objectives and anticipated outcomes of the project include increased community values, diversity of activity, sustainability and ecological enhancement.
Design work has commenced and the Town anticipate on ground works to begin in November 2021 with the project expected to be completed by October 2022. The water can then return to this important wetland to provide summer refuge for native fauna and which will create an attractive open space for the community to use year round.
The Town is also working on the updated Perry Lakes Management Plan 2021-2031 and the Perry Lakes Masterplan 2021-2031 and will consult with the community this year prior to Council adoption. As part of this process the Town will be inviting the community to join a working group to develop a Friends of Perry Lakes to assist the Town with the ongoing improvements to the natural areas surrounding the wetlands. To register your interest send an email to the Town with “Friends of Perry Lakes” in the title.
