The Town of Cambridge receives Federal and State Government grants to facilitate rehabilitation work on eligible roads under the State funding program. This funding is utilised on higher order roads to ensure the condition of the road network is maintained and not degraded over the long term.

The assessment of this road (Herdsman Parade) shows evidence of thick asphalt cracking, mostly unstable along seal joins with structural cracking in places.

The scope of this rehabilitation work is the removal of the existing top layer of asphalt to a depth of 50mm to allow a Strain Alleviating Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) to be laid on the weak and cracked base. A new 40mm wearing course is then laid to complete the repair.

The use of a SAMI seal prevents further cracking to the asphalt surface by providing additional strength and waterproofing to the existing basecourse. This treatment reduces or even negates the requirement for a completely new pavement for at least 15 years.

Current Status

The project is in the design phase; a survey has been commissioned to identify the existing assets, regulatory line marking plans are being prepared for Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) approval and construction drawings being prepared.

Next Stage

Once the construction drawings are finalised and approved, the Town issues these to our contractors to schedule the work. This involves staging the works to minimise impacts on the community.

What to expect during the works

Due to the nature of the work, it is expected that sections of the road will be left unsealed road and open to traffic periodically, this will increase dust and noise in the immediate work area. It is an unavoidable consequence of the nature of this work, therefore measures will be in place to minimise the impact. Speed reduction will be in place during these periods alongside detours.
