Road Rehabilitation Program

Maintaining the integrity of our roads is essential for safety, comfort, and long-term value. Through our Road Rehabilitation Program, we ensure that the Town’s 190 km network of sealed roads and laneways continues to meet the needs of our community.

Why Road Rehabilitation Matters

Well-maintained roads:

  • Reduce wear on vehicles
  • Minimise traffic disruptions
  • Enhance safety for all users
  • Lower long-term maintenance costs

This program is part of our broader commitment to infrastructure quality. If you're nearby, you may experience temporary disruptions, but also smoother roads ahead.

Funding is provided by the Town, Federal and State Governments under the State funding program.

Assessment Process

Each project begins with a thorough pavement investigation, including:

  • Surface distress analysis: cracking, rutting, patching, and depressions
  • Traffic load assessment
  • Review of resurfacing/rehabilitation history

This ensures we select the most appropriate treatment for each road section.

Rehabilitation Methods

1. Resurfacing

Used when the underlying structure is sound and expected to last another 20+ years.

Process:

  • Remove top asphalt layer
  • Apply a new asphalt surface Analogy: Like replacing the carpet on a sturdy floor
2. Road Reconstruction/Pavement Rehabilitation

Needed when deeper structural issues are found.

Process:

  • In-situ stabilization to rebuild the pavement’s foundation
  • Designed to extend service life and prevent early failure

Maintenance Guidelines

We target roads based on age and condition. Here's the general resurfacing schedule:

Road Category Interval
Lanes & Paths 30-35 Years
Access Roads 30 Years
Local Distributor Roads 25 Years
 District Distributor B 20 Years
District Distributor A 15 Years

These are adjusted based on real-time inspections of each road section

Annual Goals

  • Prioritise roads showing distress and older than 20 years

  • Coordinate nearby works to reduce community impact and maximise efficiency

Nightworks

We wish to inform residents that work at the above location will be taking place at night. These works are necessary to ensure long-term improvements to local infrastructure; however, they may result in increased noise levels during nighttime hours. We understand this may cause disruption to sleep and impact general living standards, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Where possible, we are taking steps to minimise disturbances, and we’ll keep you updated with any changes to the schedule.

What to Expect During Work

Local residents will receive notification about the upcoming works 1–2 weeks before they begin. The letter will provide an overview of the works, including key dates and times, and outline any specific impacts. Due to the nature of the work, sections of the road may be left unsealed and open to traffic at various times, which may lead to increased dust and noise in the immediate area. While this is unavoidable, measures will be implemented to minimise the impact. Speed reductions and detours will be in effect for the duration of the works.

Road Closures and Detours

Notifications about road closures, including specific times, will be posted on this page once the schedule is confirmed. General asphalt resurfacing works are expected to be completed within two to three days. All affected residents will receive direct notifications at least two weeks prior to the start of the work.
