Hazardous Waste, Recycling Programs, Local Recycling Centres & Drops

1. Hazardous Waste

Some items of rubbish should not be disposed of in your general, recycling or green waste bins.  This includes common household products that, if disposed of incorrectly, can potentially harm the environment.

Available disposal sites of personal sharps items can be found at Find A Pharmacy.

Carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), or oxygen (O2) cylinders or canisters of any size are NOT to be placed within your council bins, delivered to Council Offices or taken to the West Metro Recycling Centre. Please check with the supplier or manufacturer of these items for disposal options.

Household Items (including clothes & textiles)

Have lightly used items you no longer need? Consider donating them to local charities where they can find a second life with someone in need. A good rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t gift it to a friend, it’s probably not suitable to donate.

Please remember:

  • Don’t place clothing or toys with batteries in recycling bins—these items can’t be processed and may cause safety issues.

  • No batteries in any bin—always remove them before disposal.

  • Red bins are for broken or damaged items only—not for reusable or hazardous materials.

By donating thoughtfully and recycling correctly, you’re helping reduce waste and support a more sustainable community. Thank you for doing your part!
