Urban Forest Strategy

Last Updated: 23 January 2026

The Town of Cambridge is responsible for approximately 14,000 street trees located within 313 streets stretching over 190 kilometres. In addition, there are many more trees located on public reserves (including Wembley Golf Course), within natural and foreshore areas, as well as on private property.

The Town developed its current Urban Forest Strategy (UFS 2020-2023) with the following vision:

“To ensure the sustainability of the Town’s urban forest, to retain and strengthen the existing tree canopy within the Town through development of key strategies and actions.”

UFS 2020-2023 has now expired and requires revision, based on current and future challenges and trends. These include threats to the Town’s tree canopy from polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), climate change and pressures caused by urban infill.

The Town has engaged Josh Byrne & Associates (JBA) to assist the Town to develop a revised Strategy. UFS 2025-2034 will guide the Town on how to increase its tree canopy cover and develop a more resilient urban forest.
