The Town of Cambridge’s Rangers routinely check Town sites and open spaces, including Galup.
The Town recognises community concerns about the impacts of fishing on wildlife and continues to ask visitors not to fish at Galup. Community members who see people fishing are encouraged to report it to the Town’s Ranger Services. Rangers will respond and, where feasible, attend the site to educate visitors about protecting the wetland.
At its July 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting, Council noted that fishing at Galup is not currently an offence under the Town’s local law. Council supported monitoring the City of Stirling’s proposed local law changes and investigating educational information about the environmental impacts of fishing for inclusion in the Town’s interpretive signage project.
Rangers received reports towards the end of last week regarding children observed fishing at Galup (who were allegedly moved on by the community member reporting it to the Town), and also a notification from a member of the community that a bird had been entangled in fishing line at Galup, with the bird being released prior to the Town being notified.
