Spotlight on a Volunteer: Patricia’s Journey of Service
Published on 04 June 2026
For Patricia Alessi, community has always been something you build through connection, creativity and care.
Long before she founded Curate, Patricia was the kind of person who stepped in, helped out and quietly strengthened the spaces around her. So, when she settled in Perth after moving from Massachusetts and later Vancouver, it felt natural to find new ways to give back.
A voice specialist by profession, Patricia has spent years helping singers, teachers and professional voice users care for and rehabilitate their voices. But volunteering has always been part of who she is. Raised in the United States with a strong sense of citizenship and service, she carried those values with her to Australia, where she became a citizen in 2024.
Curate grew from that same spirit of service. What began with a small team of creators and a single gospel choir has grown into a vibrant community arts organisation, offering programs including choirs, classical ensembles, early childhood music classes, talent shows, festivals and regional arts projects.

Guided by the Doctrine of Affections, the idea that art has the power to move people emotionally, Patricia ensures Curate’s programs respond to what the community wants and needs.
For Patricia, volunteering is fundamentally about people.
“A community that rallies around each other is just amazing,” she said.
With more than 30 volunteers involved, Patricia invests countless hours supporting others, removing barriers and building the systems that help volunteers, performers and participants thrive.
Some of her proudest moments are not tied to performances or awards, but to the quiet acts of care she sees among members. When someone faces hardship, others step in without hesitation.
It is this sense of belonging and mutual support that continues to motivate Patricia’s work and reflects the positive impact volunteers can have across the community.
Looking ahead, Patricia hopes to expand Curate’s programs and find a new home to meet growing community demand.
