Background
The Wembley Golf Course (WGC) driving range was built in 2010, and is owned and managed by the Town of Cambridge. The building has 80 driving range bays over two levels, along with enclosed training and function rooms, a balcony, and service areas. The eastern side of the building is open, while the western side has a partially open façade that features sponsor signage. Most of the concrete and steel is architecturally exposed.
The building has experienced surface corrosion to metallic elements, and audits have highlighted areas to target compliance with current standards. The Town engaged an engineering consultant to provide recommended actions to rectify these issues and improve future weather resistance. Independent assessments have confirmed that the building is structurally sound, with no past or current issues to structural integrity identified.
Along with the outcomes above, the renewal and upgrade works will improve aesthetic appearance of the asset and overall user experience, ensuring the WGC complex remains “Australia’s best public golf experience”.
Scope of works
- Replace, clean, and protect steel components of the driving range, to prevent reduction in the building’s life
- Improve future weather resistance by upgrading the façade and stormwater management
- Improve accessibility of stairs
- Improve aesthetic appeal for patrons
These works are intended to occur in two phases, where:
- Phase one: Focuses on the most disruptive works, during a full closure. This closure occurred between 21 July 2025 and 5 September 2025.
- Further works: Will continue with similar rectification and upgrade works, at the northern end of the driving range, and staircases. This is expected to have a lesser impact on patrons, compared to phase one. These works are planned for mid-2026.
