Council has supported connecting the temporary telecommunications facilities at Ocean Village Park to mains power to address noise and fume impacts from diesel generators.
At its Special Council Meeting on 18 August 2026, Council supported allowing Telstra to connect one facility to the Town of Cambridge’s existing power supply, subject to available network capacity.
Council also supported Telstra and/or Optus upgrading the Town’s electrical infrastructure at their own cost, enabling both temporary facilities to connect to mains power. The existing supply does not have sufficient capacity to service both facilities without an upgrade.
Telstra established a temporary facility at the park in May 2025, followed by a separate Optus facility. Both are currently powered by diesel generators.
An acoustic assessment found the generators collectively exceeded the noise levels permitted under the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997. Moving to mains power is intended to resolve the confirmed noise impacts while maintaining telecommunications services in the area.
Council’s support is based on the facilities remaining temporary and does not represent approval for a permanent telecommunications facility at Ocean Village Park.
The Town will continue discussions with telecommunications providers about permanent solutions for the City Beach area, including the proposed locations, infrastructure, and delivery timeframes.
