The Town of Cambridge, in partnership with the Flower District Town Team, has been awarded a 2025 Streets Alive Stream 2 Grant to develop the Northwood Street Road Safety Masterplan.

The $100,000 project will outline short-, medium-, and long-term upgrades for Northwood Street and its intersections with Cambridge Street and Railway Parade. The Masterplan will guide the creation of a safe active street that prioritises people, slower speeds, and safer connections for walking, wheeling and cycling.

Mayor Gary Mack said the project reflects the Town’s commitment to safer and more liveable neighbourhoods.

“Northwood Street is a key local centre, and this funding allows us to partner with the community to shape a safer and more accessible precinct,” Mayor Mack said. “The support from the State Government enables practical improvements that help people move through their neighbourhoods with confidence.”

Mayor Mack said collaboration with the Flower District Town Team is central to the project.

“The Town Team brings valuable local insight,” he said. “Working together ensures the Masterplan reflects the aspirations of residents and businesses in West Leederville.”

The project will be co-designed with the community, strengthening local ownership and supporting on-the-ground behaviour change. The Masterplan will explore interventions such as street greening, traffic calming, public art, improved street furniture and people-focused design elements.

The grant forms part of the Cook Government’s broader investment in community-led street safety. More than $800,000 has been allocated statewide through the Streets Alive grants to slow traffic and make local streets more people-friendly. Across Western Australia, more than 4,000 volunteers and over 250 community groups have taken part in the program, with 85 per cent of completed projects reporting more positive attitudes towards lower speeds and safer streets.

Delivered by the Town Team Movement in partnership with Main Roads WA and the Western Australian Local Government Association, Streets Alive has received $5 million over five years, with $1.8 million awarded to more than 110 communities in its first 18 months.

Community engagement for the Northwood Street Road Safety Masterplan will begin in early 2026.
