Protection of the Town’s tree canopy remains a priority for the Town and our community.
Outcome 3 of our Strategic Community Plan states we will work towards ‘an urban forest, that is protected and enhanced with tree-lined streetscapes, sweeping coastlines, natural bushland and accessible open spaces’
In April 2024, the Town’s canopy cover was 18.6%, slightly increased from the previous measurement in March 2023. There was a decrease in the canopy at 8 to 10 metres, which represents a loss of mature trees.
The Town is undertaking regular airborne surveys to monitor the Town’s canopy and continues with the following initiatives to protect and enhance the canopy cover within the Town.

Trees are one of the Town of Cambridge's most important natural assets with more than 27,000 Council-owned trees growing throughout the Town, lining streets and growing in parks.
This strategy identified changes in canopy cover across the Town over the past five years, suburb by suburb, and compares private and public land.
The Town’s urban forest canopy has been in decline for a period of time. To address this loss the Town developed an Urban Forest Strategy to help guide actions to improve this canopy cover and protection going forward.
