Keeping birds

The Town of Cambridge Animals Local Law 2016(PDF, 327KB) provides conditions for keeping poultry, pigeons and miscellaneous birds in the Town.

Limit on number of poultry and pigeons

The number of poultry and pigeons you are permitted to keep on your property varies depending on whether or not you are an 'Affiliated Person'.

An 'Affiliated Person' is a person who is a member of a properly constituted poultry or pigeon club.

  • If you are not an 'Affiliated Person' you may keep up to a combined total of 6 poultry and 6 pigeons on one lot of land.
  • If you are an 'Affiliated Person' you may keep up to a combined total of 12 poultry and 50 pigeons on one lot of land.

The keeping of roosters, turkeys, geese, peacocks or peahens is not permitted.

Restrictions on feeding of birds

In the Town of Cambridge you are not allowed to feed a pigeon or other bird, such as swans or native birds on reserves:

  1. so as to cause a nuisance; or
  2. with a food or substance that is not a natural food of a pigeon or other bird.
