Lake Monger Drive | Signalised Pedestrian Crossing - Design
- Project scheduleDesign Phase - August 2024 to March 2025
Last Updated:07/10/2024
Despite the challenges presented by high traffic volumes on Lake Monger Drive and the growing popularity of Lake Monger Reserve, significant progress has been achieved in identifying an appropriate location for safe pedestrian access.
The Town, in collaboration with MRWA, conducted a thorough evaluation of various crossing options to ensure the most effective solution, connecting key strategic areas while prioritising pedestrian safety. The introduction of a signalised crossing will establish a clear and safe route for pedestrians to access Lake Monger Reserve.
This assessment focused on key areas such as Lake Monger Passive Use, Primary Schools, High Schools, Principal Shared Paths, Parking and Access, and Public Transport. We evaluated these areas based on their connectivity to nearby destinations, whether connections are direct or indirect, current and anticipated traffic levels, and the ease of obtaining approvals for any changes. The objective was to determine how well each location serves both current and future needs.
The site west of Kimberley Street was chosen due to its high scores in the assessment, reflecting its potential for future growth and strong links to key areas like Lake Monger and local schools. Additionally, this location allows for a staged crossing, enhancing pedestrian safety by enabling people to cross in stages rather than all at once. This phased approach improves accessibility and ensures a safer crossing experience, while minimising traffic delays.

Progress Updates
Main Roads WA provided Stage 1 support for the signalised pedestrian in early 2024, with the approval remaining valid until March 2026.
Current Status
Currently the Town is working with consultant to obtain necessary design documentation to be submitted for Stage 2 Endorsement which refers to MRWA’s Traffic Signals Approval Policy. This endorsement shall only remain valid for a period of two years from the date of notification.
