Mosquito Management Plan
The Town of Cambridge is home to a number of wonderful natural and man-made waterbodies, such as Galup Reserve and Perry Lakes, which provide diverse habitats for birds and other wildlife. We are also well known for our abundant open spaces, which we all want to enjoy throughout the year. However, recent evidence has highlighted that increasing mosquito numbers in these areas could impact how we use these spaces if left unmanaged.
The WA Department of Health has predicted an increase in mosquito numbers this year due to current La Niña conditions, with late rains and more standing water. In response to this, and the broader trends identified through our investigations, the Town has developed a Mosquito Management Plan to guide the control of seasonal mosquitoes and address this emerging issue.
The community has an important role to play in implementing this plan. It is essential that residents are informed and become active stakeholders in its success. One of the most effective actions homeowners can take is to maintain their own personal protective measures and regularly check their properties for mosquito breeding sites (for example, fish ponds, swimming pools, gutters, pot plant saucers and any water-holding containers).
