Street Entertainer Permit

Street entertaining (also known as busking) adds to the energy and makes the Town of Cambridge a special place to visit, live, and work. The Town supports a lively street atmosphere, with rules in place to ensure safety, accessibility, and a fair balance between street entertainers and local businesses.

If you are planning to perform as a street entertainer on Town-owned or managed land, you must apply for a Street Entertainer Permit. Further information regarding Street Entertainers can be found in the Town of Cambridge Trading In Public Places Local Law 2016(PDF, 94KB).

A person is permitted to perform as a street entertainer in a public place only if:

  • They hold a valid Street Entertainer Permit

How to apply

1. Prepare your documentation

Ensure you have digital copies of all relevant documents, including:

  • Public liability insurance

2. Apply online

Complete the appropriate Street Entertainer Application online at least 14 days prior to the performance. A Street Entertainer Permit is only valid for a period of 3 months. 

3. Payment

Once your application is received, the Enviromental Health Services Team will contact you regarding payment. The application will not be processed until payment is made.

Conditions of approval

There are several conditions you must be aware of before applying for approval. All performances must comply with the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997, and amplification equipment is not allowed at any time.

Performances must not involve:

  • Anything offensive or obscene

  • Acts that create a nuisance

  • Fire or weapons (sharp knives, chainsaws, swords, etc)

  • Activities that endanger public safety or cause cruelty to animals

The Town's Use of Local Government Property and Public Places Policy provide regulation for the management of activities that may be conducted on public property that is owned or managed by the Town.
