Selby & Cambridge Street Signal Improvements
Last Updated: 10 October 2025
Project Background
This project seeks to enhance safety and accessibility at the intersection of Selby Street and Cambridge Street through modern signal upgrades and the installation of new pedestrian facilities.
Currently, the intersection lacks dedicated pedestrian signals and relies heavily on driver compliance for safe pedestrian crossings. Right-turn movements are particularly hazardous, as drivers must find suitable gaps in oncoming traffic, increasing the likelihood of collisions.
Over the past five years, 30 crashes have been recorded at this location, including one that resulted in hospitalisation and five requiring medical treatment. Most of these incidents involved right-turn manoeuvres.
To address these safety issues, the Town has secured full funding through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program. This grant will support the delivery of comprehensive upgrades aimed at reducing crash risk and improving safety for all road users.
Planned Improvements
New pedestrian signals
- Installation of pedestrian walk/don’t walk lanterns
- Pedestrian-activated signals that hold turning vehicles when someone presses the crossing button
- Improved ramps and footpath for all crossings

Signal Enhancements
- Protected right turns for all legs
- Dedicated phase for Selby Street right turns
- New modern signal controller
These changes will significantly reduce conflicts between turning vehicles and pedestrians, making crossings safer and more predictable.
Traffic Movement Changes
Vehicles travelling east on Cambridge Street (from the City) will no longer be able to turn right heading north onto Selby Street. These changes are necessary to enhance safety by providing better protection for pedestrians from turning vehicles.
Alternative Route: This right-turn movement can still be performed just 100 metres away at the Selby Street and The Boulevard intersection, no deviation is required as a right turn lane already exist. This provides a convenient and safe alternative.
