Greening Galup: A new chapter for our lake

The Town of Cambridge has completed accelerated revegetation and tree planting at Galup Reserve, creating a greener and healthier environment for the community.
Supported by the Western Australian Government’s Urban Greening Grant Program and WALGA, the project has brought forward plans to enhance tree canopy, habitat, and shade at Galup.
Over the past six months, the Town prepared the site and worked with the wider community to plant close to 30,000 native plants, including shrubs, grasses, sedges and ground covers. More than 300 trees were also planted around the lake and nearby streets to improve canopy cover and amenity in the area.

Local schools, Scouts WA, AFG Brokering, Water Corporation, and Rio Tinto volunteers participated in planting days, contributing to the delivery of this large-scale environmental project.
Mayor Gary Mack said the project was a strong example of community and environmental stewardship.
“It was inspiring to see our community, of all ages, come together to green Galup,” Mayor Mack said.
“These new plantings will enhance biodiversity, create shade, and improve the experience for everyone who visits this special place.”

The project, he added, had accelerated the Town’s plans to increase canopy cover across the area.
“The Galup Greening Project shows our commitment to a sustainable future while creating a healthier environment for current and future generations.”
Remaining funding will be used to water and care for the new plantings from late spring 2025 through to autumn 2026. The trees and revegetated areas will be added to the Town’s ongoing maintenance program for the reserve.
