Smart trucks target bin contamination
Published on 27 June 2025
The Town’s waste contractor Veolia has introduced new collection vehicles equipped with AI technology to detect contamination in household bins.
Using cameras and sensors, these smart trucks analyse the contents of each bin to identify misplaced items that can disrupt recycling and composting.
Contamination can result in entire truckloads being sent to landfill instead of being processed correctly. Residents can help by ensuring items are placed in the correct bin, supporting lower contamination rates and a more sustainable waste system.
-
Green bin: For organic waste, including food scraps, garden clippings and paper towels, which are turned into compost.
-
Yellow bin: For recyclables such as paper, cardboard, glass bottles, cans and hard plastic containers, which are processed and reused.
-
Red bin: For general waste that cannot be recycled or composted, such as soft plastics, hygiene products, broken ceramics and non-recyclable packaging.
Correct sorting helps protect the environment and ensures waste is managed effectively.
