The Town of Cambridge is proud to support local artists by showcasing their works in exclusive exhibitions at The Boulevard Centre.

The exhibition is open for viewing Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm in The Boulevard Centre Gallery.

About the Artist and Collection

Ian MacRae has painted in oils since their early teens: "I gave up the prospect of art school to study at university in the UK, firstly in sociology and then town planning. I graduated with a Masters Degree and commenced a career as a town planner practising in the UK, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia). I am a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and a Life Member of the Local Government Planners Association (past President).

Notwithstanding the obligations of a professional career, I periodically returned to various aspects of my art and undertook various courses including life, watercolour painting, cartooning and photography. I returned seriously to painting in oils in early 2018, firstly following urban themes then depicting various dogs and their owners in the local dog park – mostly on commission. I exhibited at the Planners in Art exhibition held in April 2018 at Brookfield Plaza and also at Churchlands in 2018, 2021 and 2022, Perth Modern School in 2018 and City of Belmont art exhibition in 2022.

My prime motivation is to represent accurately on the canvas what I have imagined for a piece. I have developed a style that owes much to pointillism, with the difference that I use squares to give the impression of mosaics. The current exhibition features portraits of some well known West Leederville characters, with some notable pieces featuring dogs in 19th Century Impressionist paintings. I have also included pieces inspired by holidays in Greece, Rottnest and Bali."
