Professor John Mamo is Head of Neurovascular and Metabolic Diseases at the Perron Institute and has significant research capacity in chronic diseases with ageing.

With over 30 years of medical research experience, Professor Mamo is a physiologist specialising in the function of microscopic capillaries in the brain - structures pivotal to maintaining brain health.

Dysfunction of these tiny blood vessels is increasingly recognised as a key risk factor in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as neurological disorders including migraine, epilepsy, and mood and behavioural conditions.

His translational research spans genetic and cellular studies, disease models, and biomarker discovery, providing insights that inform clinical trials and large-scale population studies.

The talk will include an update on the PIA-Study (www.PIAStudy.com.au), a novel and uniquely designed clinical trial investigating probucol in Alzheimer’s disease, as well as a preview of a new Parkinson’s disease trial planned to commence in early 2026.
