The Town of Cambridge takes a proactive approach to mosquito management to help protect public health and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease. This includes early monitoring and responding to potential breeding sites across the Town.

What the Town is doing

We reduce mosquito breeding opportunities and monitor activity through a dedicated Mosquito Management Plan, developed in line with Department of Health guidance. Our work includes:

  • clearing standing water, cleaning drains and maintaining parks and reserves

  • trapping adult mosquitoes to monitor numbers and species

  • conducting larval dipping to identify breeding sites and guide effective treatment.

What you can do at home

You can help reduce mosquitoes around your property and protect yourself from bites by:

  • covering up at peak mosquito times (especially dusk and dawn) with long-sleeved, light-coloured clothing

  • applying repellent as directed (products containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus can be effective)

  • removing standing water: empty containers, unclog gutters, refresh bird baths every 2–3 days, and change pets’ water regularly

  • improving yard drainage to prevent pooling

  • keeping grass and weeds trimmed to reduce mosquito harbourage

  • using fly screens and mosquito nets to keep mosquitoes out of living spaces

  • reporting potential breeding sites (such as green pools or stagnant water) to the Town.

Remember: the only way to prevent infection is to avoid being bitten.

Let’s work together to keep the Town of Cambridge beautiful and bite-free.
