If you own or manage land in Western Australia, you are responsible for reducing the risk of bushfire on your property. This applies to all landholders and occupiers, including private residents, businesses and government entities. One of the most effective ways to reduce fuel loads and mitigate bushfire risk is through planned or prescribed burning.
Prescribed burning, however, is prohibited at all times within the Town of Cambridge. This practice is typically reserved for rural and semi-rural areas as a fire prevention measure. As the Town does not contain land of this nature, burning off is neither necessary nor permitted.
In addition, the Town does not allow the burning of rubbish or refuse. Instead, local laws require homeowners to manage fire risk by clearing firebreaks. Property owners must ensure that firebreaks are installed or grass is slashed to the required height from 1 November each year and maintained until 31 March of the following year.
Under the Town’s Health Local Law 2016, “A person must not set fire to, or cause to be set on fire, or burn any rubbish or refuse.” Breaching this requirement may result in a penalty.
