The Team

The People and Culture team works to provide continuous improvement and organisational performance across areas such as recruitment, payroll, industrial relations, employee relations, training, and work health, safety and wellbeing. The team has a commitment to nurturing a capable, resilient, and forward-thinking workforce, which is essential for achieving the Town’s strategic objectives and delivering exceptional services to our community.

 

The Role

Join the People and Culture team as our WHS and Wellbeing Advisor and help build a practical, collaborative and proactive safety culture across the Town. With a strong focus on cooperative design, capability building and continuous improvement, the successful candidate will ensure WHS considerations are embedded into everyday work practices and will support leaders and workers to make confident, early‑intervention decisions to manage workplace risks.

This is a diverse, relationship‑focused role where you will review, design, and implement safety programs, guide incident and hazard investigations, and support workers’ compensation and return‑to‑work processes. With your expertise in work health and safety, you will provide clear, high‑quality, and practical advice on legislative requirements, risk management, and the effectiveness of WHS systems and the effectiveness of risk controls.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate’s core values will mirror the Town’s values of Friendly and helpful, Teamwork, Creativity, Integrity, and Respect, and be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply WHS and workers’ compensation legislation, regulations and codes of practice, including psychosocial hazard requirements, and to provide clear and practical advice to leaders and employees.
  • Proven experience supporting leaders and employees to identify hazards and assess risks by applying risk‑management principles, with a demonstrated ability to develop confidence and capability in selecting and implementing effective control measures.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting or guiding WHS investigations using a variety of analysis methods and supporting others to build their skills and confidence in undertaking routine investigations.
  • Well-developed written communication to provide clear written reports, briefings and recommendations and strong collaborative interpersonal skills navigate challenging conversations in a constructive and solutions‑focused way.
  • Experience in reviewing, developing and improving WHS system documentation, tools and templates to ensure they are practical, user‑friendly and adaptable to emerging risks.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse WHS data and trends and prepare reports, advice and recommendations that support informed and proactive decision‑making by leaders and committees.
  • Proven ability to self‑organise and work independently or as part of a team, planning and prioritising work within an environment of competing priorities and limited resources.
  • Ability to address complex issues requiring investigation and analysis and the practical application of problem-solving methods and Risk Management techniques.

 

Eligibility

  • Tertiary (degree / diploma) qualification in occupational safety and health.
  • National Police Clearance (no older than 3 months).
  • Right to work in Australia (birth certificate, current passport or current visa).
  • Valid Driver’s Licence.
