Information for Candidates
Prior to nominating candidates are required to complete the Induction for Prospective Candidates through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. Please click here to access the Department’s website. You will be asked to declare that you have completed the induction when you submit your candidate nomination form.
Nominations open 51 days prior to the holding of an Ordinary Local Government Election and close at 4.00pm on the 44th day before the Election. For this election, nominations will open on Thursday 28 August 2025 and will close at 4.00pm on Thursday 4 September 2025. Nominations are to be finalised and lodged in person with the Town’s Returning Officer at a pre-arranged appointment before the close of nominations.
An effective nomination consists of the following:
- A completed nomination form which is available from the Town’s Returning Officer or the Western Australian Electoral Commission
- A profile of the candidate of not more than 1,000 characters (including spaces)
- A nomination deposit of $100.00 in the form of cash, bank cheque or money order, and
- A photograph (optional).
Before nominating, potential candidates should familiarise themselves with the information for candidates available on the Western Australian Electoral Commission’s website regarding eligibility, nomination and disclosure of gifts requirements.
The documents may be hand delivered or posted to the Returning Officer and must be received by the close of nominations. Candidates are encouraged to make an appointment with the Town’s Returning Officer well before nominations close to discuss nominations.

Candidate Information Briefing Webinar
When: Monday 18 August // 6pm to 7pm
Where: Online via Zoom
WALGA, together with the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) and the WA Electoral Commission, will be hosting an Election Candidate Information Briefing webinar on Monday 18 August commencing at 6pm.
This session is designed to support individuals considering nomination and will provide a clear overview of:
- the election process
- the responsibilities of Council Members and Local Governments
- the regulatory role of LGIRS in Western Australia
The following presenters will cover a range of topics, with the aim of preparing candidates for the electoral process, and if elected, life as an Elected Member, hearing from:
- Hon. Hannah Beazley MLA - Minister for Local Government; Disability Services; Volunteering; Youth; Gascoyne
- Karen Chappel AM JP - President, WALGA
- Dennis O’Reilly - Acting WA Electoral Commissioner, together with Phillip Richards - Manager Election Events
- Erin Gauntlett - LGIRS Deputy Director General
- Tony Brown - Executive Director Member Services, WALGA.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the session or via email, afterwards.
