Town broadens appeal avenues for parking infringements

The Town of Cambridge Council called a Special Council Meeting on 3 July 2025 for the specific purpose of broadening the avenues for appealing a parking infringement within the Town.
Acting in direct response to concerns and feedback from parking customers, Council resolved that the Town will update its parking infringement appeals processes to allow for reconsideration in cases where users have paid for parking but entered incorrect vehicle registration details into the parking machine or EasyPark app.
This change follows feedback from parking customers who felt it was unfair to be fined despite having paid for parking, simply due to minor data entry errors. Previously, appeals were only considered under limited circumstances such as medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or stolen vehicles.
At the Special Council Meeting, Council acknowledged that the feedback they had received indicated the current system did not reflect customer expectations. The updated grounds for appeal now include user errors with on-street parking machines and the EasyPark app, such as mistyped licence plate numbers or selecting the wrong vehicle.
Town of Cambridge CEO Lisa Clack stated:
“While our previous approach was aligned with other metropolitan local governments, we acknowledge it was out of step with some customers’ expectations. Last night, Council demonstrated they are open to listening to community concerns and followed through by requesting the Town’s Administration adjust their parking infringement appeals process.”
At the meeting, Council also broadened the grounds for appeal regarding medical emergencies; to be medical emergencies more generally and not only those related to the owner of the parked vehicle.
The Town’s Administration will also undertake an internal review of infringement appeals processes to identify areas for streamlining and improvement.
